GitHub Next vs Replit Ghostwriter

GitHub Next Copilot Voice was a voice-first coding experiment that let developers talk to GitHub Copilot inside Visual Studio Code. You spoke natural language to generate or edit code, jump to methods, run programs, toggle IDE commands, and ask for line-by-line explanations. The project page describes it as a completed research prototype formerly called Hey, GitHub.

Typing-first copilot extensions assume a keyboard for every navigation step. Copilot Voice used Microsoft embedded speech with a Copilot wake word so you could control the editor hands-free, which targeted accessibility and speed for developers who struggle with typing-heavy workflows. The trade-off was experimental scope: it required Java, competed with standard Copilot completions, and stayed in a signup-only technical preview.

GitHub concluded the Copilot Voice preview on April 3, 2024 and moved learnings into the generally available VS Code Speech extension. The GitHub Next project page now points developers there for ongoing voice interaction in VS Code rather than this standalone preview.

Replit Ghostwriter is Replit's AI coding line inside its browser IDE, and the public ghostwriter URL now highlights Replit Agent for building production-ready apps through chat. You describe an app or site, refine it in conversation, and Agent can search the web, connect Stripe or OpenAI, use built-in database and auth, and test its own work in a browser loop before you publish.

Compared with standalone autocomplete plugins, Replit bundles the editor, hosting, database, and agent workflows in one workspace. Agent adds Extended Thinking and High Power model options for harder tasks, plus automations that can talk to Slack or email. The trade-off is effort-based credits: heavy Agent builds consume monthly allowances faster than simple Ghostwriter completions.

Starter is free with daily Agent credits and one published project. Core costs $20 per month billed annually ($25 monthly) and includes $25 of monthly credits plus up to 5 collaborators and 2 parallel agents. Pro is $95 per month billed annually with $100 credits, 15 collaborators, 10 parallel agents, and 28-day database rollbacks. Students, indie builders, and small teams are the core audience.
